Hyundai has indeed come a long way from being the butt of jokes in its early years in the American market. The fuel-efficient Hyundai Accent was recently named the most dependable sub-compact car by J.D. Power and Associates in its 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). The highly regarded study measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2005 model year) vehicles.

The study is based on the responses of more than 52,000 owners of new vehicles bought between November 2004 and April 2005. The Accent registered only 187 problems per 1000 cars, an improvement of more than 20% over the 2007 results. The Accent’s scores were boosted by measured improvements in the engine, climate control and seating categories.
This is the highest ranking ever for the Accent, but the honor doesn’t rest solely on the sub-compact car. Hyundai as a brand made dramatic improvements in its overall dependability scores, such as:
The number of problems per 100 vehicles over the entire product lineup dropped 28 points to 200, a 14 percent improvement over 2007, almost tripling the industry average improvement of 10 points.
In the “non-premium” segment, Hyundai improved from 13th place to sixth place.
Hyundai’s score placed it 13th among the 38 nameplates measured in the study and placed it ahead of the industry average for the first time.
Each product in the Hyundai product portfolio improved over last year.

As oil prices climb up to record highs, automakers are scrambling to produce a commercially-feasible electric vehicle. Hyundai hopes to make a good head start in the Hybrid Electric Car segment with the introduction of the make’s first hybrid electric car. The Asian country’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy divulged that Hyundai is currently conducting test drives of a hybrid electric version of its Avante model, a compact car called the Elantra in Australia, North America and Europe.
The hybrid Avante will use a lithium ion rechargeable battery pack. Expected to be sold in 2009, it will be the first South Korean hybrid electric vehicle. The new hybrid car can reach 37.9 miles per gallon compared to 24.7 miles per gallon for conventional engines or up to 35% savings on fuel. If successful, Hyundai could beat GM and Mitsubishi to the electric car race.
General Motors is planning to roll out Volt, its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, in the US come November 2010. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Motors is aiming to be the first makor automaker to bring an all-electric vehicle to the mass market by 2010, is fast-tracking the development of its prototype 4-door iMiEV electric vehicle.

Travel to Canada and you would find the Hyundai Accent, a small car that comes with an inexpensive price. This vehicle can be bought for only $9,995. That is the same price that the vehicle had thirteen years before. Experts in the industry say that at present, this is the only vehicle that can be bought for only four figures.
With the addition of the Hyundai Accent in the Canadian auto market, the small car war is just about to get hotter. The vehicle would be competing with the Kia Rio which comes with a tag price lower than $10,000.
Analysts say that with such low prices being attached to vehicles, consumers have come flocking to dealerships and getting a unit of these low-priced vehicles for themselves. The problem though is that these consumers are so happy with the low price that they forget to test the vehicle first before the actual purchase.

Toyota and Honda dominated the list of the top vehicle models with the highest fuel economy ratings released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Five of the top ten most fuel efficient vehicles in the U.S. today were manufactured by Toyota, now the world’s second largest automaker. The hybrid car Toyota Prius topped the list with a fuel economy rating of 60 mpg city and 51 mpg highway.
Meanwhile, Honda’s Civic hybrid and Fit were also cited for their high fuel economy scores with the gas-sipping Civic coming only second to the Prius. The list is rounded up by other Asian models: the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio tied for 9th place. Meanwhile, the Ford Escape FWD and 4WD were the only domestic models on the list.

Underscoring the excellent quality and safety of Toyota automobiles, the Camry sedan and RAV4 SUV recently earned top honors for side/front crash safety. The two Toyota vehicles dominated the other models evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Other models tested included the latest versions of the Dodge Caliber, Kia Optima, Lincoln Zephyr, and Hyundai Tucson SUV. All six vehicles garnered “good†or “acceptable†ratings in front crash tests. However, five of the six vehicles got a poor rating in rear-end collision protection. Only the Kia Optima got a good rating for rear crash safety though it was not tested for side impact crash. The tests involve crashing the vehicles into a barrier at a speed of 40 mph as well as hitting the vehicle from behind at 20 mph.
The vehicles with side air bags got the highest marks. This bodes well for the NHTSA’s mandate for industry-wide use of side airbags. Apparently, side air bags can save up to 1,200 lives in the US every year. However, side airbags remain as an option (priced at about $650) in most vehicles today. Only 38% of current vehicles come with standard side airbags, while another 30% offers the safety feature as an option.

If electronic stability control or ESC is standardized in all current vehicles, one-third of all fatal crashes or close to 10,000 deaths can be prevented in one year. This is a significant percentage of the nearly 34,000 crash-related deaths that happen every year here in the U.S. According to the study, vehicles that are equipped with ESC are 43% less likely to be involved in fatal crashes. This new study further underscores the importance of ESC in vehicle safety.
How does a ESC help keep a vehicle safe in crash situations?
ESC relies on two other underlying technologies: anti-lock brakes and electronic traction control. Anti-lock brakes use sensors to detect when a car’s wheels are about to lose traction under hard braking. The system then pumps the brakes at an extremely rapid rate, allowing the wheels to regain traction so that the car stays in control and can be steered effectively.
Electronic traction control uses similar sensors to detect when a car’s wheels are spinning out of control under hard acceleration. The system automatically reduces power from the engine until the wheels regain traction.
ESC uses a variety of sensors to detect when a car is skidding, or is about to skid, because of hard cornering and slippery road conditions. The system will rapidly apply the brakes for fractions of a second at individual wheels and simultaneously reduce engine speed to keep the vehicle under control. Such systems can often react even before the driver is aware that there is a problem.

Now, if only everyone can avail of ESC. Right now, only 40% of current passenger vehicle models offer ESC as a standard feature. It is also offered as an option in 15% of new vehicles. To make matters even worse, ESC costs quite a lot, ranging from $300 to $800 as a stand alone option. In some vehicles, it is bundled with a more expensive options package. Because ESC is no offered as a standard feature, most car buyers are not aware of it and usually don’t ask about it.
Now, more automakers are moving towards the standardization of ESC in their vehicles. GMC has signified that all its vehicles will be ESC-equipped by 2010. Ford Motor Corp. has also announced that it is ‘moving towards standardization’ of ESC. Chrysler SUVS including Jeep and Dodge vehicles will have standard ESC as early as the end of this year while all Hyundai vehicles now offer ESC technology.
The government has started to require ESC on all vehicle models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is set to impose a proposed emergency handling test that will effectively require all automakers to make ESC standard on all their vehicles.

The legendary Chevrolet Corvette widely regarded as “America’s Sports Car’, zoomed to the top of 2006 list of the top ten “sexiest, hottest, and wildest wheels†released by Road and Travel Magazine. The other pony car, Ford Mustang, came in at second. Rounding up the elite list were the BMW Z4, Hyundai Tiburon, Honda S2000, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Nissan 350Z Roadster, Dodge Charger, and the new Pontiac Solstice. As expected, almost all the cars listed were sports cars and coupes with the exception of the Dodge Charger, the only four-seater on the selection.
All these cars possessed one common denominator: pure sex appeal. Road and Travel Editor-in-chief Courtney Caldwell explained the predilection towards sports cars. She said that ‘sports cars are all about the sensations they inspire from how the supple leather feels on our skin to its aromatic splendor, from the youthful spirit felt driving one to the sun on our back and wind in our hair; Sports cars are about fantasy and self image. Just looking at one incites erotic thoughts and visions of grandeur. Owning one turns those images into reality!’
The other cars who made it to the list have already won accolades from other award-giving bodies. The Pontiac Solstice took home the ‘Most Sex Appeal’ award at the 2006 International Car of the Year Awards. The Dodge Charger won the coveted top plum: Car of the Year. Meanwhile, Nissan 350Z’s ads won for it the 2nd Annual Heart String Award for best car commercial, also given out by Road and Travel Magazine.
