The Ford F-150 is about to get a new 4.4-liter V-8 diesel engine within the decade. Ford is currently in the development and planning stage though the diesel engine is still awaiting approval. The new diesel engine will be a scaled up version of the 3.6 liter V-8 engine that Ford developed for the Range Rover. As soon as it is approved, we may see a launch production within two-three years. Meanwhile, diesel engines are already available in Ford’s line-up, specifically in large pickups. Other automakers also offer diesel engines in their pickups.
Ford has been contemplating on developing a diesel engine for the Ford F-150 for many years now and even considered buying the engine from outside suppliers. Now, Ford is bent on developing its own diesel engine. Meanwhile, Ford hasn’t officially confirmed its plans for the 4.4 liter engine. Ford spokesman Nick Twork said that “The best thing to say is we intend to maintain truck leadership. We have some great diesel engines in our lineup.”

It is about time that a F-150 owner can purchase a diesel powered unit with all the advantages of a F-150 and none of the rough and tumble of the Super Duty line. A trailer at 7500# max should be within the F-150 capacity and the owner can still have a compfortable truck for the rest of his needs.

Don’t get your hopes up too high, I was chomping at the bit when Ford announced the Diesel F-150 for the 2004 model year and then Ford cancelled the contract with International. I have come close on many occasions to just biting the bullet and buying a 3/4 ton just so I can have a Diesel truck again and convince myself “one day they will build a half ton diesel.”
My diesel Jetta saved me when I was in Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina because gasoline was nowhere in sight and diesel was aplenty….bring on the diesels.

Ford has been using smaller engines in Europe and Latin America for years already, Ranger for example uses a 3.0 Turbo Intercooler engine in Latin america and it is a strong and fast truck, I wonder why they haven’t introduced them to the USA market

What about the fuel used to run this monster? In the UK you would not be able to afford to Road Tax this 4×4 due to the road Tax being paid by engine size.
I have to admit this is a fantastic looking pickup and the design team should be proud. With a new 4.4 V-8 engine in it I bet it could pull down a house.
