American Racing was born in 1954 when Romeo Palimedes, the paceleader of early drag racing, joined minds with machine shop owner J.O. Ellison to create a racing wheel for his drag car. The result is a revolutionary magnesium racing wheel that has high strength-to-weight ratio. Afterwards they met with engineer Tom Griffith, and the rest as they say is history. American Racing Equipment, Inc. became officially integrated in 1956. During this time, there was high clamor for high-tech and lighter wheels that can cater to the burgeoning sport that was street and hot rod racing. Fifty years later, the company has manufactured more than thirty wheel designs for professional, amateur and street racing. At present they have wheels for passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, off-roads, vintage cars with designs in the Pro-series, Shelby legend, and the Dale Earnhardt Jr.

American Racing is credited with firing up the custom wheel craze in the early 60s with their innovative designs such as the Americans, 5 spokes, and the Torq Thrusts. The Torq Thrust is now considered a classic with its tapered parabolic contoured spoke that is very light and generates advance brake cooling. It has become the wheel image model for performance and custom enthusiasts. It is the most famous wheel and appeared in Hot Rod Magazine in 2005 as one of the auto parts that revolutionized the automobile industry.

In 2003, America Racing introduced the DuPont and Teflon coated wheels, as a result of their 2 years exclusive partnership with DuPont. The wheels were tested in the demanding tracks with NASCAR-like conditions. They are engineered to be brake dust resistant, can withstand intense weather conditions, and very easy to clean. They are another step forward when it comes to wheel technology.
