Brake drum or drum brake is one of the complicated devices in your vehicle's brake system. This is composed of a pair of brake shoes and a piston, an adjuster mechanism, an emergency mechanism, and a number of springs. But how does this brake drum works? When the brake pedal is pressed, the piston is able to push the brake shoes against the drum. This seems simple, yet it doesn't end here and that what makes the drum brake a little complicated. When the shoes get contact with the drum, a wedging action that presses the shoes into the drum using more force actually takes place.
This force that is produced through the wedging action will allow the drum brakes not to use a disc brake but rather a smaller piston. When the shoes are heated during braking, the brake drum's diameter increases since the materials gets bigger or expands.
