Aimco Brake Drum

Brake drum or drum brake is one of the complicated devices in your vehicle's brake system. This is composed of a pair of brake shoes and a piston, an adjuster mechanism, an emergency mechanism, and a number of springs. But how does this brake drum works? When the brake pedal is pressed, the piston is able to push the brake shoes against the drum. This seems simple, yet it doesn't end here and that what makes the drum brake a little complicated. When the shoes get contact with the drum, a wedging action that presses the shoes into the drum using more force actually takes place.

This force that is produced through the wedging action will allow the drum brakes not to use a disc brake but rather a smaller piston. But these shoes must be separated away from the drum as soon as the brakes are released. From this, the spring takes its action by holding the brake shoes in place and returns the adjuster arm just after it act. Typically, the brake drum always needs a good set of brake shoes. In fact, there are some designs of brake drum with an inspection hole on the back side to easily view the condition of the brake shoes. When the friction material has already gotten its minimal thickness of 0.8mm, the brake shoes then needs to be replaced.

Ignoring this condition can cause grooves on the brake drum itself. While disc brake should maintain a minimum allowable thickness, this drum brake has its maximum allowable diameter. When the shoes are heated during braking, the brake drum's diameter increases since the materials gets bigger or expands. If such condition occurs, the brake should be depressed to restore the brakes efficiency. When trouble is experienced in your brake drum, you must consider replacement soon. A good quality brake drum like the Aimco brake drum could provide you more with its extensive features. So take advantage of it, purchase this product now, here at Parts Train.
