The suspension bushing like the Addco suspension bushing is a major part of the suspension system. Common bushings found in the market today are made with natural rubber although urethane compounds are used in some cases. Those made of natural rubber offer outstanding tensile strength and excellent stability at low temperatures. Natural rubber is an elastomeric material referring to the natural elastic nature of rubber. This allows movement of the bushing in a twisting plane. The design of the rubber element controls the movement. Lubrication is not required with the use of natural rubber that isolates minor vibration, reduces transmitted road shock, operates without being noisy, and offers a large degree of bushing compliance.

All suspension components such as the control arm bushings are dynamic which means that they operate while the vehicle is in motion. The control arms for example act as locators since they hold the position of the suspension in relation to the chassis. Attached to the vehicle frame with rubber elastomeric bushings, they provide a pivot point for the control arm, keep the lateral and vertical location of the control arm pivot points, maintain dynamic wheel alignment as well as reduce transmitted noise, road shock, and vibration, while sustaining resistance to suspension movement during the suspension travel. While on the process, the rubber portion of the bushing allows control arm movement by twisting.

Well-performing control arm bushings do serve like a spring in the sense that the rubber will spring back to the position from which it started. Such twisting movement of the rubber provides resistance to suspension movement. Remember that rubber bushing must not be lubricated with petroleum-based oil.
