It significantly acts not only as an ordinary radiator lid, but also as a 'cooling component'. It helps keep the engine cool by providing a tight seal and effectively pressurize the coolant in it.

The radiator cap is specifically designed to hold the coolant situated in the radiator which is under a prearranged pressure amount. If not, the entire coolant will boil away especially when it is not kept under pressure. But the radiator cap also known as pressure cap helps prevent this irregularity from occurring by giving an adequate pressure to avoid unnecessary boiling of the coolant. Usually, a water coolant boils at 212 degrees F, but when the pressure has been optimizing, the tendency of an increased in boiling temperature is large. And since the boiling point increases when the pressure goes up, the coolant on the other hand can be heated to a temperature which is above the 212 degrees F without boiling.

The significance is that the higher temperature of the coolant is, there will be more temperature gap that is between the coolant and air temperature. 'The hotter the coolant is, the faster the heat moves into the radiator', this is the truisms that causes the cooling system to function. As a whole, the role of the radiator cap is to ensure that the cooling system will not blow up. It can also be tested along with a cooling system pressure tester by utilizing an adapter to ensure it has an accurate pressure rating. If it fails the test then immediately replace it. Note, don't remove the radiator cap from a boiling hot engine, removing the pressure may cause the steam to shoot out and burn you.
