A friend once made a joke. He said that the latest Yugo GV is equipped with new air bags but you may have to pump real fast when you sense an impending danger. Well, true indeed, Yugo GV may not have the newest functional parts like air bags but it is actually, one of the most long lasting auto makes in the market. Although it is also true that the Yugo is considered more as a toy rather than a real car because of some points that need further improvement but all in all, the car is one of the greatest exports in the auto market. The first Yugo was manufactured by the Zavodi Crvena Zastava in 1981 with flat form based from the Fiat 128 mechanics and Autobianchi A112 body style. Offered as three-door hatchback and convertible body styles, the Yugo GV entered the US market through Malcolm Bricklin, a well known auto entrepreneur from Phoenix Arizona. He introduced the Zastava Koral or Yugo as a low cost car together with Subaru, Bricklin and Fiat. Yugo originated in Yugoslavia which was later on introduced in United States in the summer of 1986. It sold real fast at first because of its price which was then, less than $4000. However because of the sanctions imposed by the United States on Yugoslavia in the 1990s, production of the Yugo was forcibly stopped. Three models fared a good command in the US auto market – Yugo Great Value or Yugo GV priced at $3,900, Yugo GVL with features closely similar with the GV and Yugo GVX which was meant for high performance driving applications like racing. The convertible type followed in 1988. Yugo GV became the standard model in the early 90’s. It was in 2002 when Yugo made a comeback in the US auto market, still through the efforts of Malcolm Bricklin who made a deal with Zastava.
