How do you think would a car sell if it is poorly made but sold at a very low price? Yugo tried, and it wrecked the name of the company forever. There is still hope, however, with these kinds of cars if you know how to tinker with it and you know where to get the right parts for it.

Yugo is a brand of subcompact cars manufactured by the Zastava Motor Works based on Serbia and Montenegro. It was imported to the US from 1986 to 1990 under the same company, and later under Yugo America, a company created by Malcolm Bricklin. In 1991, the company was force to discontinue its US imports due to poor sales and bad reputation.

The very first Yugo car introduced in the US was priced less than $4000, making it sold very well in its first year. Reviews and criticisms, however, exposed flaws and poor make quality, causing sales to drop in the succeeding years. Although the company claimed an improvement in their other car models, its reputation for unreliability was never erased in the mind of the people. After three car models which were all met with bad consumer appreciation, the company ceased marketing cars in the US in 1991. Zastava Motor Works continue to manufacture Yugo cars for other countries, although production rate have gone lower and lower each year. The company planned to re-enter the US market in 2003 but the plan failed.

The only cars sold by Yugo in the US are the GV, GV Hatchback and the Cabrio. All were considered unreliable and of poor quality. As we said, there is still hope for your Yugo car.
