The year 1985 marked the birth of the Volvo 780 coupe as it exhibited the return of the Volvo two-door and two plus two-seater coupe after an almost half a decade absence following the extinction of the Volvo 262C in the year 1981. As we know, subsequent cars are being built with similarity to their predecessor only with changes, redesign and modifications. The Volvo 780 was also designed and built similar to its antecedents but it was more than a two-door Volvo 760 with what they call “chop top” roof. It was given a unique distinctive shape which really set it apart from the other models yet still, obviously a Volvo product.
The Volvo 780 has sleek, low profile, and inheriting some styling and features of the 700 series cars only that it did not have harsh angles and sharp corners. Its hood, trunk and roof lines are all slightly lower than the standard 700 series profile, and the C-pillar was a bit wider and had a more gradual slope down to its trunk. Headroom was also enhanced as compared to the 262C. As for the window frames, it had a black matte trim and accented with chrome together with the door handles, bumpers, and side mouldings.
The Volvo 780 had larger headlamps, and that the flush-mounted units with integrated high and low halogen beam, it had black grille, and an “egg-crate” design that was similar to the 740 Turbo. Its fog lamps were integrated into the air dam, also a new tail-lamp design. The tires mounted on the Volvo 780 measures at about 205/60 HR15 wide on a 15-inch, 15-spoke alloy wheels with a certain color format other models don’t have.
The Volvo 780’s interior particularly the cluster and general dashboard layout was originally carried over from the previous Volvo 760 model but was impressively redesigned to be unique just for this model. It was highlighted by a birch burl wood with a high-gloss finish. Other interior features include contoured front, sculpted bucket seats with height-adjustable headrests and specially shaped rear seats having both seats are hand-stitched leather upholstered, four speaker stereo system with cassette receiver, seven-band electronic graphic equalizer, and a high-power amplifier for its audio system. Remaining significant features of the Volvo 780 includes, map reading lights, power moonroof, and standard driver’s side airbag and anti-lock brakes that were considered as a luxury item in year 1987.
