It was in autumn of the year 1974, when new generations of Volvo Cars was launched -the Volvo 260 Series along with the Volvo 240 Series. The former had two models as compared to the latter's six models. The Volvo 260 Series has the 244GL which was the top of the range and had the fuel injection engine and leather upholstery, and the 264GL which had the choice of leather or plush upholstery and had electric windows. Power steering was standard on both model and had a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

At first look, you would think that the earlier 140 or 160 Series came to live again, but the Volvo 260 Series is also inspired on the Volvo Experimental Safety Car (VESC) which is a 1972 trial product experiment in car safety. The 260 Series had a new front and its dashboard and brakes were modified in addition to the McPherson strut type of suspension that was fitted both at the front and rear suspension. It also had a new engine which is a V6. The new 6-cylinder engine was the first outcome of the Peugeot, Renault and Volvo's joint undertaking for the development of car engines and became known as the PRV engine — a V6 B27E engine that has a capacity of 2664cc and can generate a 140 horsepower. The block was made of aluminum alloy fitted with wet cylinder liners.

Right after, the 1976 260 Series models were launched that showcased a number of changes such as the addition to the range of a carburetor version on the B27 with an SU carburetor giving an output of 125 horsepower but only used in the 264 DL and the new 265 DL estate. Another significant change was the improvement of the gearbox throughout the range by introducing a new manual gearbox. The B12A had a new camshaft which increased the output to 100bhp dropping the B20A engine because of emission regulations.
