The Volvo 1800 or Volvo P1800 as what it is otherwise called in its hometown Sweden is indeed one of the longest lasting coupe in the auto world. Imagine traveling for 300,000 miles after 40 years of use? That’s truly amazing!
It was in the mid 90’s when the Guinness Book of World Records certified the Volvo 1800 owned by Irvin Gordon of East Patchogue, New York as the Non-Commercial Vehicle Driven Most Miles by a Single Owner. It was a Volvo P1800S which was also branded as the car with the highest mileage comfortably driven at 300, 000 miles. Thus, Gordon was then known as the “Two Million Mile Man.”
The car was purchased in June 30, 1966, the same day when the Beatles first landed in Tokyo for a concert tour. It was also on that same day when England’s football team won the first World Cup against Germany. After 40 years, the members of the Beatles and the England Football Team that played on that same date were separated, each having their own private lives and others, nowhere to be found. Yet, the Volvo 1800 also purchased on that same date is still in its top quality condition, whole and free from any damages. Still, with the same power train including the engine, axle, transmission and certainly, the same owner.
Asked of his plans for the car, "I'll keep on driving, but whether I drive three million miles is more up to me than it is the car. The car's parts may be able to take it, but I'm not so sure about my own." Gordon said.
