Triumph Motor Company was not left behind during its prime popularity. It manufactured SUVs, pick-up trucks, coupe as well as sports cars. The Triumph Stag was marketed from 1970 to 1978 by the company with featured design made by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti.
The Triumph Stags were four-seater convertible coupes. It consisted of a B-pillar “roll bar” hoop attached to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. The removable hardtop was a famous factory option for the Triumph Stags and because of that; the hardtop became a customary fitment. At first, it was an experiment for Michelotti. It was requested by Harry Webster, the Director of Triumph Engineering in the 1960s. Upon the experiment, Webster came to like the design and brought it to England. The Triumph Stag was produced which then was a two-door drop head or convertible. It had little resemblance to the Triumph 2000 saloon from where it got its shape and cut. The T2000 and T2500 were the improved versions of the Triumph Stag.
The Triumph Stag contains a Slant-4 engine, which consists of a single overhead cam cast iron block with aluminum heads, the same as in the Triumph V8. But, the cylinder heads of the two engines had different footprints on their engine blocks. The good thing about the Slant-4 engine is that it could be simply installed in a front-wheel drive vehicle. In its launching in 1970, the Triumph Stag suffered from engine and design problems because of poor built quality prevalent to the British motor industry during that time. Problems include water pump failures relating to poor drive gear hardening, premature wearing out of the gear, sudden stopping of the water pump, inadequate engine maintenance and limited coolant, which may lead to overheating and lot more troubles.
Although the Stag suffered from engine problems, it was now considered as an equally pleasing car. In the United Kingdom, it is believed that almost 9, 0000 Triumph Stags survived most probably because of its distinctness and the timeless Michelotti design.
