Suzuki Esteem In 1995 in a not so grand ceremony, Suzuki unveiled its newest offering, the Suzuki Esteem. Initially it was offered only as a sedan. This Japanese driving machine merges a moderate price, a multitude of standard features, and good fuel economy. It also provides surprisingly a sporty driving experience. Not bad for a relative compact sedan that is a new comer in the industry.

The Suzuki Esteem is being offered in two trims, there is the base GL and the up-level GLX. Providing the power to drive the Esteem is a 98-horsepower, 1.6-liter, inline four-cylinder engine connected to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Ample space is provided in the Esteem sedan, sitting comfortably five passengers. By 1998 a wagon joined the Esteem roster providing a variety and covering a wider market. A new trim was also added that year, the GLX+, this trim had more standard features available only to the lover level trims as options. The Suzuki Esteem wagon was available in four trims beginning from the base trim the GL, GL SE, GLX and then the GLX SE.

In a continuous effort to keep the Esteem in fighting form in the competitive market of compact cars, the Esteem has been given improvements every year. By 1999 a bigger more powerful engine was provided, a new 122-horsepower, 1.8-liter 16 valve dual overhead cam engine. Also the body of the Esteem was re-designed to give it a fresher, newer look. Now more and more people have forwarded attention to the Esteem realizing that this Suzuki made vehicle may indeed be serious in competing. But the re-design and the new engine wasn’t enough to propel it to at least the top-ten selling cars in its class.

Even with minor detail changes in the succeeding years the last of the Esteem sedans and wagons would be rolled out in 2002. They were replaced by the fresh looking avan-garde designed Suzuki Aerio. Through its seven year production run though, the Esteem still made some impressions not only in American soil but also in other parts of the world. There are still some Suzuki Esteem being utilized today and still possesses the above average driving performance it possessed when it was still in production.
