The name was actually the idea of FHI’s first president, Kenji Kita, as a name for the first car produced by the company, the P-1 which was later called the Subaru 1500.

Although the first car that displayed the Subaru brand was the Subaru 1500, the first car that became the company’s official car was the Subaru 360, a small passenger car. From then on, the company manufactured a multitude of other light weight vehicles bearing the Subaru brand. In 1968, Subaru started its venture in the US with the creation of the Subaru of America, Inc.
