Sterling 827
The Sterling 827, a follow up to the Sterling 825 which survived only two years of production due to poor sales, was provided with better features and a larger engine. Described as a mid-luxury sports car, these vehicle is quite fast and has an exceptionally sprinty acceleration. The Sterling 827 is very comfortable and is the perfect motorway cruiser. Brought about by the Austin-Rover in the U.S. as their entry model for the re-entry of their company again, they created the Sterling brand to give a fresh name and a brand new start. The British company had a deal with Honda that helped them in their easing in back to the American market.
For its 827, Sterling decided to upgrade the engine as so that it could entice more buyers. The Sterling 827 sported a 2.7 liter 160 horsepower V6 engine which had 162 lb-ft of torque. Much more, optional features then became standard for the base SL and more features not present before became standard with the more luxurious SLI trim. Also a racing hatchback was introduced reminiscent of the Rover SDI which was the first rover sedan introduced by Rover in the American market. They called the upgraded 827 the Vitesse.
But soon enough Rover could see that the Sterling models were not doing very well. Not enough units were being sold. Incidentally, the Honda made Acura Legend which had the same engine as the Sterling 827 was gaining much popularity and has been increasing sales from year to year. Newer efforts and marketing gimmicks were done to revive the fledging sales. But it was a case of a too little too late. The stigma of the previous weakness in some points were really catching up and ravaging the company’s image. By August of 1991 the Rover Group made its decision, for the third time in twenty years, they are once again pulling out. The company just simply couldn’t afford to maintain a network in America anymore, and with that the Sterling was gone, a page in American automobile history.
Even when the last Sterling rolled out almost 15 years ago there are still some that exists today and are very much road worthy.
