Sterling 825 Sterling was a subsidiary of the Austin-Rover company which was created in the mid-1980’s to alleviate the re-entry of the British company into American soil. They somehow needed a fresh image to eradicate the poor reputation they had received during their previous launch. Sterling was to be the answer to their problems; this was merely a marketing strategy which may just be the solution. With their previous showing of the SD1, the company felt it would be suicide to bring the brand back as they were planning to release their newest creation the Rover 800, that’s why for America they renamed it the Sterling 825, which was launched in February of 1987.

Honda became a developmental partner for this page of the Austin-Rovers company history. They wanted the help of the Japanese company due to the fact of their success of their Acura line-up. They knew Honda had the experience and the expertise in this department. Thus the Sterling 825 was fitted with a Honda legacy. For the first year, 1987, the Sterling 825 garnered good sales for a new comer, many had expected it to rise but nevertheless, the sales were only half of its initial year.

The Sterling 825 came in two trims, the S model and the SL. Both trims were powered by a 2.5 liter V6 engine which had 151 horses in it and has a torque of 154 lb-ft. This is a very sporty car that can race with the best of them. Harnessing all these power is the standard 5-speed manual overdrive; a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission was optional for both trims. Considering its large engine, the Sterling 825 had good mileage, averaging 19 and 24 mpg in city and highway driving respectively. Many features such as manual sun roof, power windows and locks came standard with the Sterling; some though were optional for the base model such as leather seats, but in any case, the exterior design of the Sterling 825 exuded class and sophistication brought upon by classic British designs.

Rover-Austin had high hopes for the Sterling 827, their initial offering sales were high and in the second year they even sold some under the badge of the Rover 800, but due to the poor showing in the second year and some upgrades that were being planned by the British and Japanese company merger, the Sterling 825 was soon discarded and replaced by the faster and stronger Sterling 827.
