When the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow (1965-1976) was discontinued, a derivative coupe and convertible version was introduced in the name of Rolls Royce Corniche. Such model was introduced in 1971 for the coupe body style and, 18 months after for the convertible body style. Both were beautifully and elegantly engineered by the Mulliner Park Ward. It was produced until 1996, but was again revived in 2000 for 2-year production. The Corniche was divided into 5 generations with the first through fifth generations being produced respectively and successively from 1971 until 1976, from 1977 until 1988, from 1989 until 1992, from 1993 until 1996, and from 2000 through 2002.

The Corniche II only had little modifications. Notable changes for it include the use of alloy and rubber bumpers in place of the chrome ones, the use of aluminum radiator and additional oil cooler. A driver’s side airbag and anti-lock brakes also became standard equipments. The Bentley Corniche was changed into Bentley Continental in 1984. The coupe version was dropped during this era. The Corniche III was introduced in 1989 during the Frankfurt Motor Show. Significant changes and features for this generation include standard anti-lock brakes in the 4-wheel discs, specified 3-speed automatic transmission, monochromatic-colored bumpers, and the Bosch K-motronic fuel injection was used on the 1990 Corniche and Continental models.

Came 1993 when the Corniche IV was introduced. It was produced at Crewe, a town in Cheshire in the northwest England as the Mullinard Park Ward had already been closed. Distinctive features for it include glass rear windows instead of the old plastic ones, a specified cfc-free air conditioning unit, driver and passenger airbags, and improvement in the mechanical system particularly the removal of the manual latching. It was also during this time when the Rolls Royce Corniche S was introduced. In 2000, the final Rolls Royce Corniche was introduced as a luxury two-door, four-passenger convertible. It was designated as Rolls Royces’ flagship car. It was also considered as the most expensive automobile from the Rolls Royce vehicle lineup. Its platform was based on FR Bentley Mulsanne’s. Available powerplant and transmission for it are 6.75-liter V8 and 4-speed 4L80-E automatic.
