If you loved the Rolls Royce’s Silver Shadow, then you will get to love also its derivative coupe and convertible version called the Rolls Royce Corniche. The Corniche was elegantly and beautifully, crafted and engineered by Mulliner Park Ward in London. Even as early as 1939, the name Corniche was already used in the prototype base of the Bentley Mark V automobile. However, such vehicle was actually not produced because of the onset of World War I. It was in 1971 when the Corniche coupe was launched; and one a half years later, the Corniche convertible was then introduced. However, the coupe version was discontinued in 1982. Moreover, the Corniche was also called as the Bentley Corniche or Bentley Continental.
In 1977, after the original Corniche underwent minor redesigns and changes, the second generation Corniche or better known as the Corniche II was introduced. Notable features for it include the use of an aluminum radiator coupled with oil cooler. Also, alloy and rubber bumpers were substituted for the earlier chrome ones. For those Corniche II sold in North American market, a driver’s side airbag was added, while those units sold in other markets featured an anti-lock brakes as standard equipment. Moreover, Corniche II’s Bentley version had some updates in 1984 designating its new name as the Bentley Continental.
Available powerplant for the Rolls Royce Corniche II is a V8 OHV, 90-degree engine with hydraulic valve lifters. The engine’s bore is 4.10 inches while the stroke is 3.90 inches. Available transmission for it is a 3-speed automatic. The combination of these two can reach a top speed of 200 kilometers an hour, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles an hour in just 9.7 seconds. The Corniche II measures 207.50 inches in length, 72.70 inches in width, 59.80 in height, and 119.50 for the wheelbase. And finally, its suspension system uses lower wishbones and coil springs and anti-roll bar for the front, and independent, semi-trailing arms with coil springs, anti-roll bar and automatic leveling for the rear.
