The Corniche was Rolls Royce’s coupe and convertible version of the famous Silver Shadow, an automobile model that was introduced in 1965 and was produced until 1976. The Corniche was assembled at the Mulliner Park Ward in London as a replacement for the discontinued Silver Shadow. Although the name Corniche was already used in an automobile that was based on the prototype Bentley Mark V as early as 1939, it was however never produced because of the World War II’s inception. The Rolls Royce Corniche, also known as the Bentley Corniche and Bentley Continental in 1984, was introduced in 1971 and was produced until 1996. The Corniche coupe though was terminated in 1982.
Technical specifications for the Rolls Royce Corniche include a powerplant of 6.8-liter V8 engine that had an aluminum-silicon alloy block and aluminum cylinder heads with cast iron wet cylinders. Such engine has a bore of 4.1 inches, a stroke of 3.9 inches, and an original single Solex 4-barrel carburetor (1975) which was then changed to twin SU carburetors (also used in export models until 1980 with the additional Bosch fuel injection system).
Moreover, available transmission for the Corniche is a 3-speed automatic (based from General’s Motors’ Turbo Hydraulic 400). It suspension is made up of a four-wheel independent suspension with coil springs that was enhanced by the hydraulic self-leveling system in the rear-wheels. And its braking system featured four-wheel disc brakes (ventilated discs were added in 1972). Its original wheelbase measures 119.75 but was extended by .25 inches in 1974 and another .5 inches in 1979.
The Rolls Royce Corniche was divided into 5 generations. The first generation refers to those automobiles which were produced until 1976. The second generation was those which were produced until 1988. The third generation refers to those which were produced until 1992. The fourth generation refers to those Corniche which were produced until 1996. The fifth generation was introduced in 2000 and was produced until 2002. The Corniche S was also introduced in 1995 but was immediately discontinued a year after. Each of this Corniche generations had distinct features, and underwent some minor and significant changes, predominantly regarding exterior and technical aspects.
