Renault R18i The Renault R18i was introduced in February 1978 as a replacement for the Renault R12 and R16. The R18i became the second most successful car by Renault after the R5. Two versions on body styles were on offer, a sedan and an estate. New turbo engine that gave 125 Hp output appeared two years later. Diesel versions TD and GTD were equipped by 4-speed gearbox, GTD on demand also by 5-speed gearbox, they were released in 1980. The first versions TL, GTL had a 1397 ccm engine of 64 Hp output, versions TS, GTS were equipped by 1647 ccm engine that gave a 79 Hp output. Renault 18 equipped by an automatic gearbox had an engine of the same capacity, but reduced output of 73 Hp.

In 1979 the Renault R18 Break was introduced in a car show in Geneva. The performance of 1647 ccm engine was increased to 96 Hp in 1982. Production of a new R18 turbo model equipped by an engine of 110 Hp output started in 1981. Four wheels drive R18 version showed up in 1984. A new 1995 ccm engine of a 104 Hp output was born the same year. The production of R18 finished in 1984. By 1985, an all-new Renault R18 Break with 4x4 was introduced. The following year, Renault discontinued the R18 to much dismay of its loyal followers. The R18 was replaced by the R21.

The Renault R18 owed its success to its practical sense in design and engineering. It was a beautiful car which was set out to please everybody, anytime anywhere. As a matter of fact, its marketing slogan was “Meeting International Requirements”. Renault wanted a vehicle which could cater to any type of race and they have certainly achieved their goals setting record sales they haven’t experienced for a long time.
