The Renault R18 is considered as the second most successful car after the Renault R5 which only took two days to finish the design. The conversion of the design to a real car make was done for 18 months, which could probably be the reason why it was branded as the Renault 18. Basically it was meant as replacement for the Renault 16 and Renault 12. Renault R18 is renowned as a world car. It was sold not only in top auto market spots like Europe and US but also in other Asian countries like Mexico, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Thailand and Turkey. Upon its first year of production, the car is offered as a for door sedan with TL, TS, GTL and GTS versions. A 1397cc Cleon engine is used by the TL and GTL. It was actually patterned after the 1289cc engine used for Renault 12. On the other hand, GTS and TS retained the 1647cc power train that powered the Renault 17 TS. A four speed gearbox is matched with the engine of the TL, TS and GTL while a five speed gearbox is paired with the GTS. A station wagon style followed in 1979 although the features are still similar with the former sedan. However, the point of difference lies on the more powerful rear suspension of the wagons as compared with the sedans. The 2.1 L naturally aspirated diesel engine together with a 125 bhp turbocharged engine came in for the following year production.
