Encore The Renault Encore was for sometime thought to be the Renault Alliance Hatchback; anyway, the Encore was a French 3-door and 5-door hatchback based on the Renault 11. It was so closely associated with the Encore since they debuted together and were on of the first close knit projects of AMC and Renault. They shared so many specifications and design, but the Encore basically came as a hatchback, in either 3 -door or 5 -door form with different trims, such as the base and the higher standard LS.

Launched in late 1983, Renault released the Encore in American soil while in Europe it was known as the Renault 11. Although the two cars had different moniker, and outline, they were in fact one and the same under the skin, and were projected to jointly replace the older Renault 14. The Encore/11 was also discernible from the Alliance/9 by its front end, which featured the square twin headlights already used on the Alliance in North America. Both cars were somewhat unremarkable, using Renault's antiquated C-type overhead valve engines in 1.1 or 1.4 liter format, and a basic suspension design which resulted in a rather ordinary driving experience. The newer F-type engine which had been developed in collaboration with Volvo appeared in later years in 1.7 liter form. The Renault Encore had a little brush with fame when it was featured in a short car race scene on the ever popular James Bond Series in the movie “A View to a kill”, where in James Bond steals a Renault Encore/11 taxi from a Parisian cab driver and uses it to pursue an assassin. The car has its roof torn off in the resulting car chase, and is then chopped in half in a collision with another car, incidentally, another Renault, the Renault 20. The Renault Encore with the Alliance gained popular response in America where in they sold a combined more than 6,000 units in their dizzying production run, from 1982 to 1988. The Encore was built here in the United States and they enjoyed the luxury, American produced cars employ, its durability. There are still some Renault Encore’s still in operation today.
