Alliance Alliance was the name for the American version of the R9. The R11 was sold as the Encore in the US. The R9/R11 was very akin both cars were redesigned for the North American market to cope up with the market specifications and taste. This car was aptly named Alliance for the union of AMC and Renault. Renault was actually the one who bought out AMC. The car was built in Kenosha, Wisconsin, presumably for better reception by American consumers. In 1983, the Alliance was heralded as Motor Trend's Car of the Year. The AMC/Renault Alliance was manufactured from 1983 until 1988, and was available as a two-door, four-door, and in 1987, a hatchback version. In 1987, the Encore became known as the Alliance hatchback. There was also a GTA version of the Alliance available in 1987. Officially, AMC/Renault halted production of the Alliances in 1987, but there are rumors that some cars tagged as 1988 Alliance left the factory.

The Alliance had great success in its Europe offering the R9. The Renault 9 became the best-selling car in Renault's history and far and away the most popular model in France. European journalists bestowed upon it their 1982 Car of the Year award. Size has everything to do with the R9's success at home and it’s potential in the North American market. While it's slightly smaller than a Ford Escort on the outside and a bit bigger on the inside, the new Renault looks larger and more inviting. The classic three-box sedan layout certainly adds visual substance, as do the urethane-clad bumpers.

The Alliance is the lightest car assembled in the U.S. in its time, tipping the scales in base trim at just less than 2000 pounds. While the engine is a tried and true pushrod 1397cc four-cylinder from the Le Car, it's dressed in the latest electronic trappings. The Alliance was supplied a digital ignition system, as well as a microprocessor to manage the optional three-speed automatic transmission. The fuel system is also electronically controlled.
