The company was founded by Louis Renault in 1898 together with his brothers, Marcel and Fernand. The brothers became the pioneer of the automobile industry in France. Renault as a private corporation was cut short by the two world wars, when Louis Renault was imprisoned and the company was acquired by the French government. Nonetheless, the company was able to manufacture more cars and acquired or partnered with other car manufacturing companies. From 1979 to 1987, they became a major stakeholder of the AMC, which they sold later to Chrysler. Presently, they hold major stakes in Nissan as well as other car manufacturing firms like Samsung Motors, Volvo Trucks and Dacia. The company is currently a privately owned enterprise even though the government still owns 15 percent share.
