In the 1970s, General Motors created an automobile body platform that later came to be known as the decade's most prolific world car program. This body platform was the GM T-body platform and was first introduced to the world in 1974 through Chevrolet Brazil as the Chevrolet Chevette. The platform was later introduced in other GM markets around the world in different names, including the Opel K-180 in Argentina, Holden Gemini in Australia, Chevrolet San Remo in Colombia, and others. In the U.S., the platform was first introduced in 1975 as the 1976 model Chevrolet Chevette.

Pontiac also had a T-car version but it only appeared in 1980. It was called the Pontiac Acadian and was only sold in Canada. It was not until 1981 when Pontiac U.S.A. had its own version of the car, which was named as the Pontiac T1000. It was sold side by side with the Chevrolet Chevette until 1987 when both cars were dropped from General Motors' vehicle line-up.

The Pontiac T1000 introduced in 1981 was actually very similar to the Canadian Pontiac Acadian. It was a rear-wheel drive subcompact car that was available in 2-door and 4-door hatchback body styles (although some people would identify the styles as coupe and regular sedan). Standard in the vehicle is a 1.6-liter inline-type 4-cylinder engine and a selection between a three-speed automatic transmission and a four-speed manual transmission. This drive train specification hasn't changed much for the model's seven-year stint, although a five-speed manual transmission became an option from 1983.

A part of the world famous T-cars in the 1980s, the Pontiac T1000 is now considered as a plain old car. Probably, there are still some groups of people who are interested in Pontiac T1000 vehicles that they can add into their classic vehicles collection, but the Chevrolet Chevette seems to outdo the T1000 in the classic car category. Nevertheless, the Pontiac T1000 remains to be a good classic car, and it can still perform well these days if equipped with the right Pontiac T1000 replacement and restoration parts.
