The Plymouth Valiant is probably Plymouth’s and Chrysler’s most popular and know car. For its entire 17 year run, the car never lost its popularity or its reliability that it is known for. And when Chrysler finally decided to drop it from its model line-up, the company paid a big price that almost cost them bankruptcy.
Introduced in 1960, the Valiant was originally designated as a marque or make of its own. It is a compact car and was Chrysler’s entry to the emerging compact car market of the late 1950’s. It was aimed to compete with the more radical Chevrolet Corvair and the more conventional Ford Falcon, both of which are compact offerings of the General Motors and Ford, respectively. Among the three, the Valiant stands in the middle and provides buyers a decent alternative, and a popular one, for both cars.
A year after its introduction, the Valiant was finally assigned to the Plymouth division and named the Plymouth Valiant, while a Dodge version was also introduced and called the Dodge Lancer. Among many other things, Chrysler boasted about the Plymouth Valiant’s mechanical reliability and technical strengths. It was home to the new Chrysler Slant Six engine, an inline type of engine although a bit inclined on one side. It was also equipped with a standard 3-speed manual transmission with floor shift, the first of its kind for Chrysler. Another new and innovative equipment in the Plymouth Valiant is the AC alternator, an industry first that replaced the conventional DC generator.
Standing in the middle of its competitors both in cost and equipments, the Plymouth Valiant became an instant hit on its first few years. As common with most Chrysler cars that became popular, a variety of models using the Valiant body style and design sprouted in succeeding years. Among these new Chrysler car models are the Dodge Dart, Plymouth Barracuda, Plymouth Duster, Plymouth Scamp, Dodge Demon and Chrysler 3700. All of these models were sold alongside the Plymouth Valiant until the entire line-up was dropped in 1976 and was replaced a year after with the less popular Plymouth Volare and Dodge Aspen pair.
Although the car is very popular once, the Plymouth Valiant today costs a bargain for a collector car, with the muscle and pony vintage cars occupying the higher priced models. But this would be an advantage for most classic car buyers, because at this cost you’ll have a lot of money to spare for restoration and repair Plymouth Valiant parts. Here at Parts Train, we have high quality and high performance Plymouth Valiant classic and vintage car parts.
