The Plymouth Laser is an American made car, or at least it was manufactured in the US, although its engine and most of its mechanical parts are designed in Japan. Maybe it was just one of the many cars that Chrysler and Mitsubishi jointly made, but the Plymouth Laser is one of the more special ones. It was a car that the two companies can really call a product of their joint venture.

The Plymouth Laser was introduced to the North American market in January 1989 as a 1990 model. Although its style is clearly Japanese, the car was manufactured and assembled in the US under the Mitsubishi-Chrysler joint venture called the Diamond Star Motors (DSM). There were many cars manufactured by Mitsubishi and Chrysler but only three were considered DSMs, and one of them is the Plymouth Laser. The two other cars are the Mitsubishi Eclipse and the Eagle Talon.

Except for some styling and cosmetic differences, the Plymouth Laser, Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon are basically the same car, both mechanically and architecturally. All are 2-door 2+2-seater coupes that have 2 full seats on the front and a cramped seat on the back that can accommodate two children or cargo. For the Plymouth Laser, four trim levels were available (three upon introduction). The base models were equipped with an underpowered 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 92 horsepower. A larger and more powerful 2.0-liter twin-cam four was fitted on the RS model and outputs 135 hp of power. The third trim would be the RS Turbo, which was equipped with a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine and produces 190 horsepower. In 1992, an RS Turbo AWD model was introduced, which is basically the same as the RS Turbo but with an added standard AWD system. All trims are equipped with a standard 5-speed manual transmission unit and, except for the turbo models, an optional 4-speed automatic shift.

The Plymouth Laser is undoubtedly one of the best sports coupes you can find. Its mid-level 2.0-liter engine performs well with the manual shift, although the turbocharged AWD drive unit still is the best choice. The underrated 1.8-liter, on the other hand, performs meagerly and the does not do justice to the sporty appearance of the car. Handling and steering is also superior, although the car may feel a bit bumpy and uncomfortable inside due to the stiff suspension. The perfect car for the sporty type, the car may not be a popular choice for comfort loving sedan buyers.
