When someone mentions the name ‘Porsche Carrera’, only one thing comes in mind—speed. Even if a person does not know what a Porsche Carrera is, one would generally conclude that it’s a fast and high performance car. And this, indeed, is true, as the ‘Carrera’ name has been used by Porsche to designate the high performance model for many of its cars.

Porsche used the ‘Carrera’ name in their high performance car models to signify their involvement and successes in the Carrera Pan Americana races. Actually, the earliest Porsche Carreras were racecars used for the Carrera Pan Americana races. The first of such cars was introduced in 1955 in the Frankfurt Auto Show. Beginning 1957, Porsche Carreras in coupe and speedster bodies was produced; and in 1959, a quieter street legal version came into production.

But the more popular Porsche Carreras first appeared in the 1970s. In 1973, a high performance model of the Porsche 911 was introduced and was called the Porsche Carrera RS, with a touring version called the Porsche Carrera RST. In 1975, Porsche began to apply the ‘Carrera’ nameplate for the high performance models of the Porsche 924, calling an upscale turbocharged version the Porsche 924 Carrera Turbo. In succeeding years, Porsche would often use the Carrera name for the high performance versions of the 911 and 924, like the 924 Carrera GT and 924 Carrera GTS.

However, there has not been an independent model called the Porsche Carrera until the Porsche Carrera GT was introduced in 2004. The Porsche Carrera GT is a sports car that first appeared as a concept car in 2000. When it was introduced in 2004, the car was categorized as a supercar. Current models of the car are equipped with a 5.7-liter V10 engine with a maximum rating of 605 hp. Standard transmission is a six-speed manual unit.
