The Boxster is considered as the fastest selling Porsche of all time, and it is extremely easy to understand why it is named as such. The car was a convertible sports car whose design was closely similar to the Porsche Spyder and Speedster.
The name ‘Boxster’ best describes what the Porsche Boxster is. The name is actually an amalgamation of two words: boxer and roadster. The Porsche Boxster is a roadster that uses a boxer engine (a horizontally-opposed engine) for its powertrain. For the first generation of the car, designated as the 986 model, the engine used for the standard model was a 200 bhp, 2.5-liter flat six-cylinder engine. An upscale trim, called the Boxster S, was equipped with a 3.2-liter version of the boxer engine and outputs 258 bhp. With a horizontally opposed engine mounted on the midsection of the car, the Porsche Boxster has a lower center of gravity and delivers a well-balanced weight distribution.
The Porsche Boxster was redesigned for the 2005 model year and the new car is designated as model 987. There was basically nothing new with the style of the new car except for some minor revisions. It, however, gets a larger and more powerful engine. The base trim now gets a 2.7-liter boxer engine rated at 240 hp while the upscale S trim gets the 3.2-liter version rated at 280 hp.
