An upscale trim, called the Boxster S, was equipped with a 3.2-liter version of the boxer engine and outputs 258 bhp. With a horizontally opposed engine mounted on the midsection of the car, the Porsche Boxster has a lower center of gravity and delivers a well-balanced weight distribution.

The Porsche Boxster was redesigned for the 2005 model year and the new car is designated as model 987. There was basically nothing new with the style of the new car except for some minor revisions. It, however, gets a larger and more powerful engine. The base trim now gets a 2.7-liter boxer engine rated at 240 hp while the upscale S trim gets the 3.2-liter version rated at 280 hp.
