When we talk about sports car one name that would invariably come to mind is Porsche. Porsche has established its name as a leading sports car manufacturer through long years of persistence, determination and ingenuity. One of their products, the Porsche 356 made it to the market from 1948 up to 1965. This car was Porsche’s debut car. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche was the person responsible for conceptualizing the Porsche 356 with the styling done by Erwin Komenda. This car underwent a lot changes and modifications over its design, feature and bodywork. Upon its first release, the 356 was primarily available as a coupe. In 1949 it was developed as a cabriolet meaning that it had a removable or retracting roof and rear window. This body style is also popularly known as a convertible. From a cabriolet its design also came to that of a roadster.
Aside from the various changes in its body style, there were also innovations made in its technical details such as the engine. In 1948 the 356 operated on a rear wheel drive system, a 4 cylinder engine that can pump up 40 hp and 50 ft-lbs of torque. There was only one option for transmission and this is the 4-speed manual. In 1954 they came up with an upscale model of the 356 which is the Porsche 356 Speedster. This was so well-received by the market that more than 4100 units were sold. Another offshoot of the 356 was the 356A in 1955 and in 1959 was the 356B. All of these models have upgrades done to their engine and technical features in order to go along with the changing taste of the market. The Porsche 356 was so successful that it really catapulted the company into fame with its great sales. In 1964 the company brought in a new 911 model which ended the 356 line. According to the company’s statistics more than 78,000 units were sold and about half of that number still exists today.
