There are some people who consider the Pontiac Phoenix as old and unreliable. Some other would consider it poorly made and of poor quality. On the other hand, other people would call it nice or acceptable, for the plain reason that they can’t do anything about it, as it is the only car they’ve got. But most people won’t say any of these. When asked about the Pontiac Phoenix, most people would simply reply, “What is a Pontiac Phoenix?”
Well, the Pontiac Phoenix is a small, compact car manufactured and sold by General Motors’ Pontiac Motors Division for the first time in 1977. It was a compact car closely similar to the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Omega and the Chevrolet Citation. The Pontiac Phoenix and its other GM siblings were all based on the GM X-body platform, which was used by General Motors to replace the platform once used for the muscle cars of the 1960s and early 1970s. Among the X-bodies, the Pontiac Phoenix was probably the first to be sold, and also the first to be dropped from the line-up. Production for the Pontiac Phoenix ended after the 1984 model year.
The X-body cars, especially the Pontiac Phoenix, was General Motors’ first attempt to make a compact car as an answer to consumer requests due to the fuel crisis that hit North America in the mid-1970s. It was also the first compact front-wheel drive manufactured and sold by General Motors. Instead of the regular V8 engines that GM used to equip their cars prior to the fuel crisis, the Pontiac Phoenix was equipped with a choice of more economical and more fuel efficient V6 and inline-type 4-cylinder engines. Its body was also lighter to enable the underpowered engine to drive it capably.
But instead of being a success, the Pontiac Phoenix and the rest of the X-bodies proved to be a desperate attempt of General Motors to compete in the small car division. The car was poorly designed and had many problems, making critics rate the car as unreliable. Before long, General Motors declared the X-body project as a failure and started to drop its X-body cars from its line-up, starting from the Pontiac Phoenix in 1984 and the rest of the X-body cars in 1985.
Unreliable as it may be, there is still hope for the Pontiac Phoenix.
