Have you ever heard of a car whose name ended before the actual car did? Well, the Pontiac J2000 may be considered as one, as while the name was used for barely five years, the car was sold longer using a different name. Nonetheless, people who know the Pontiac J2000 considered it dead after its five-year stint, and thus Pontiac J2000 cars are rare and hard to find nowadays. And so are the Pontiac J2000 parts, although one can use parts from other J-body cars in place of it.
The Pontiac Motors Division of General Motors introduced the Pontiac J2000 for the 1982 model year. It was a small, affordable car based on the J-body platform that replaced the H-body as General Motors’ main platform for the early 1980s. The car was actually one of the first J-bodies along with the Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, Buick SkyHawk and Chevrolet Cavalier.
When it was introduced in 1982, the car was available in four body styles: two-door coupe, two-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and four-door wagon body styles. Standard engine for all body styles was a 1.8-liter inline-type four-cylinder engine. The power generated by the engine is transmitted to the front wheels either through a 3-speed automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual transmission. This specification remained the same through the entire run of the model, which ended in 1986.
After the 1982 model year, the Pontiac J2000 was already called the Pontiac J2000 Sunbird. This convention continued until the 1986 model year, after which the J2000 name was removed and the car was simply called the Pontiac Sunbird. The Sunbird was sold until the 1994 model year, until it was again renamed to be the Pontiac Sunfire. While the Sunbird was actually just a renamed Pontiac J2000, most would claim that it was a totally different car because it offered some distinction from the original Pontiac J2000.
