One of the oldest automobile brands to survive the tests of time is the Pontiac. The name Pontiac was already used in 1900s by the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works and was being related to Chief Pontiac. In 1908, the two companies merged to form the Oakland Motor Car Company, and came to manufacture Cartercars. A year later, General Motors bought the Oakland Company and started building the first Pontiac automobiles, which are less expensive because it made use of 6-cylinders as opposed to the 4-cylinder models. Since then, Pontiac automobiles became more popular and its sales output was impressive.
As one of the General Motors brands, the Pontiac brand is the one that represents the automobiles between the luxury cars and entry-level cars. Pontiac automobiles are perfect for those who are looking for not so luxuriously-equipped vehicles yet not poorly-equipped either, vehicles which are not that expensive although display enough standard equipments and amenities, and vehicles that offer above average performance. Moreover, such automobiles are known for exhibiting sportier appearance and performance. Pontiac automobiles have been a good choice to consider within the range of younger generation of car enthusiasts because of the vehicles’ youthful and aggressive personality.
Some of Pontiacs most outstanding models include G6, GTO, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Vibe, Sunfire, Montana, Aztek, Bonneville and Safari. The name Safari was used to represent Pontiac’s version of the 2-door Nomad station wagon, which was initially seen in the 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Motorama concept car. But in 1955, such body style was transferred to Pontiac full—size automobiles for better sales output expectation. Four years later, the name Safari was incorporated to Pontiac’s full-size four-door station wagon range of vehicles such as the Catalina, Executive and Bonneville.
The Safari’s high popularity lasted only until General Motors dropped the unique sport wagon body at the end of the 1957 models, and its production was formally discontinued in 1989. However, in 1977, a bigger version of the Safari station wagon was offered and was named Grand Safari. The Pontiac Grand Safari was the company’s large wagon that became available in 1970s particularly from 1971 until 1977. Notable feature of the Grand Safari is its clamshell tailgate design that was never seen in other models.
