When you speak of car manufacturers, the name General Motors Corporation is definitely one of the best. Being the largest carmaker in the world, General Motors used several marques to represent their manufactured automobiles. Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Saturn and Pontiac are just some of the brands used by General Motors. Of these brands, the Pontiac-brand automobiles are being produced and sold primarily in the markets of United States, Canada and Mexico since 1920s. From that time on, a number of Pontiac automobile models were already introduced and some of them have even stood above the rest. Some spectacular Pontiac models include the G6, GTO, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Vibe, Sunfire, Montana, Aztek, Bonneville, and LeMans.
The Pontiac LeMans initially came out as a mid-size automobile from its introductory year in 1962 until 1981, and as a compact automobile from 1989 until 1994. The LeMans was designed as a top of the line version of the compact Pontiac Tempest but highlighted sportier and more luxurious trimmings than the latter. It was equipped with an initial powerplant of either a 215-cubic inch 6-cylinder V8 or 326-cubic inch V8 engines. In 1964, a new performance GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) car package option with 3879-cubic inch V8 engine coupled with 3-speed floor shift manual transmission with Hurst shifter was offered by the LeMans. Such version also offered heavy-duty suspension, red-line Tiger Paw tires and GTO nameplates.
After several powerplant upgrades, styling changes and redesigns, the 1962 LeMans was downgraded to the mid-line level of the Pontiac car lineup. It was available in three body styles to which are the four-door hardtop sedan, two-door hardtop coupe and convertible. It also displayed a bigger 400-cubic inch V8 engine to produce 330 horsepower. In 1978, the LeMans was downsized, reducing by some 600-800 pounds. Its powerplant was also downsized to 231-cubic inch V6 engine with optional 302-cubic inch V8 engine. Also during that time, some mid-sized models such as the base LeMans, the revived Grand Am and the Grand LeMans become available. The Pontiac Grand LeMans lasted until 1981 when the base LeMans and Grand LeMans models were joined by the new LJ trim level.
