The Pontiac Astre was a line of cars manufactured and sold by General Motors’ Pontiac division in the 1970s. While the car was introduced in the US only in 1975, the Pontiac Astre has been sold in Canada since 1971. It was introduced in Canada in the same year the Chevrolet Vega was introduced in the US. Both cars were based on the early version of the GM H platform and are closely similar except for some minor cosmetic details.

When introduced in the US in 1975, the Pontiac Astre came in three different body styles: compact coupe, hatchback and station wagon. As common for Pontiac cars, the station wagon model was called the “Safari”. While in different body styles, all came in a 2-door, 4-seater (or 2+2-seater) configuration. The standard engine was a 90 hp single-barrel carbureted 2.3-liter 2300 SOHC Inline 4 engine while a 2-barrel 100 hp version of the same engine was available as an option. A 2.5-liter I4 engine was also introduced before the model was dropped after 1977. The Pontiac Sunbird replaced the Pontiac Astre for the 1978 model year.
