The Plymouth Volare was supposed to be a more luxurious and worthy replacement to the successful Plymouth Valiant. And while the car was indeed luxurious, it fell short of being a worthy replacement. The car has not been able to achieve the success that once belonged to the Plymouth Valiant. And while the Plymouth Valiant today is priced somewhere in the collector car price range, the Plymouth Volare is not even priced as a classic, although it is a good used car by any measure.
The Plymouth Volare was introduced in 1975 as a 1976 model. It was supposed to replace the Plymouth Valiant and the rest of the A-body cars but ended up being sold with them for about one year. It was introduced together with the Dodge Aspen, and together was called the F-bodies, as they were based on the Chrysler F-body platform.
Unlike its compact car predecessor, the Plymouth Volare is a midsize car. It was available in 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and 4-door station wagon body styles, with each body style standing on a different wheelbase length. The chassis of the Plymouth Volare, and similar Dodge Aspen, were that of a typical Mopar, although the front suspension design is new and a bit different and the rear suspension introduces new parts. Engine options include a 225 Slant Six, a 318 V8 and a 360 V8, with a 2 barrel option for the Slant Six offered for the 1979 model year.
The Plymouth Volare, and the other F-body cars, had a good and well-engineered design. It was also fully equipped with amenities not offered on its Plymouth Valiant predecessor. But the early Plymouth Volares have poor quality, which Chrysler blamed on its hurried production and early introduction in the North American market. Early models had several recalls that cost Chrysler a lot. And although the later Plymouth Volare models are of better quality than the early models, the reputation made by the early Volares has tarnished the name of the Plymouth Volare forever. Without much success on the car, Chrysler eventually dropped it in 1980.
With its short run, produced for only five years, the Plymouth Volare did not become popular. And neither is the car considered a collector item today, basically due to its very common style. But the Plymouth Volare is a reliable used car, and with a few high quality Plymouth Volare parts, the car can perform better.
