The Plymouth Turismo began as a styling package for the Plymouth Horizon TC3. After some years, it became an independent model. And a few more years, the car became more powerful. But now, the Plymouth Turismo is simply an old car that needs a lot of high quality Plymouth Turismo parts to be of better use.
The Turismo name was first used in 1980 for a special styling package for the Plymouth Horizon TC3. It was then called the Plymouth Horizon TC3 Turismo, but later the car was plainly called the Plymouth Horizon Turismo. When Plymouth TC3 became an independent model in 1981, thus dropping the Horizon name, the special package became known as the Plymouth Horizon, but still the car was under the Plymouth TC3 model. It was only in 1982 that the Plymouth Turismo became an independent model and had options and packages of its own.
As a special package for the Plymouth TC3, the Plymouth Turismo is but an option with more exterior and interior accessories. Aside from the usual components that go with the base Plymouth TC3, the Plymouth Turismo would come with cast aluminum rims, rear spoiler, low-back premium bucket seats, black moldings, and bright monochrome paint. The package was upgraded in 1981 to include steel wheels, sport bucket seats, Rallye instrument panel, 4-spoke steering wheel, side and rear spoiler markers and a lot of others.
The Plymouth Turismo became a separate model in 1982, and in 1983 it eventually replaced the Plymouth TC3. As an independent model, it was equipped with the same engines and transmission options for the Plymouth TC3. An upscale model was also introduced in 1982 and was called the Plymouth Turismo 2.2, as it was equipped with a 2.2-liter engine rated at 107 hp. It was sold together with its nearly identical Dodge twin, the Dodge Charger 2.2. The 2.2-liter engine became available for the base Turismo in 1986, a year before the Plymouth Turismo was officially dropped from the Chrysler vehicle line-up.
The Plymouth Turismo wasn’t very popular when it was still in production, and neither is it popular today. This results to parts that are rare and hard to find, and this is not good news for Plymouth Turismo owners.
