The Plymouth Satellite was just one of the many not-so-known cars manufactured by Chrysler. Surprisingly, the name has been used by the Plymouth-Chrysler division for 10 years, from 1965 up to 1974. The “Satellite” name was first used to name the upscale trim of the Plymouth Belvedere in 1965, the same year that the Plymouth Belvedere was downsized to the mid-level category. A year after its debut, the Plymouth Belvedere Satellite was given some styling revision along with a new optional engine, the Street Hemi, which was once available only to the Plymouth Belvedere I Super Stock.
The Plymouth Satellite became a separate car model in 1967, as the GTX trim occupied the top-of-the-line spot for the Plymouth Belvedere. On the same year, the Plymouth Satellite also got the popular 318 V8 engine, an engine famous for being bulletproof and virtually indestructible. A year later, the high performance Plymouth Sport Satellite was introduced and was sold in 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible and wagon body styles. This line-up would be carried on until the 1970 model year. From 1971, the Plymouth Satellite was offered in Sebring, Custom and Regent Wagon trim levels.
Unlike the more popular Plymouth car like the Valiant, Road Runner, or even the Fury, the Plymouth Satellite was not able to get so much buzz, neither positive nor negative. There was actually nothing new with the Plymouth Satellite when it was introduced to attract so much attention. The car was plainly a version of the Plymouth Belvedere that would eventually replace it when the said model was dropped in 1970. The car was eventually dropped from Plymouth’s vehicle line-up after 1974 and was replaced by a downsized version of the Plymouth Fury.
