By the name of the car itself, one can insinuate that the Plymouth Sapporo is not a locally manufactured car but rather a Japanese import. Expectedly, it was just another of the Japanese captive imports that Chrysler sold in the US. But there is something unexpected with this Plymouth car model. The Plymouth Sapporo is a luxury car instead of the usual affordable car in the Plymouth vehicle line-up.

The Plymouth Sapporo was just one of the many Japanese captive import car that the Chrysler Corporation have marketed in the US while they are in partnership with Mitsubishi Motors of Japan. Instead of selling their cars directly in Japan, Mitsubishi would get the services of Chrysler and market their cars in the US with the Chrysler Badge. In fact, the Plymouth Sapporo is just a version of the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, a subcompact car sold in Japan since 1976.

While the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda was being sold in Japan since 1976, the Plymouth Sapporo was introduced in the US only in 1978. It was a large subcompact car that was sold in the US until 1983. It was similar to the second generation of the Dodge Challenger, basically shares the same mechanical and body parts with the Sapporo except for some minor styling details. While the two are basically the same, they are marketed with different orientations. The Dodge Challenger was sold as a performance car while the Plymouth Sapporo was marketed as a luxury car.

It was a bit surprising for Chrysler to introduce a luxury car under the Plymouth brand, but that’s really what the company has in mind. The company wants to conquer the market by surprise. This was evident on the car’s unique and distinct design. With emphasis on luxury, the car was filled and loaded with a lot of exterior and interior amenities, including Mitsubishi’s brand new and innovative mobile electronic equipments.

Putting so much emphasis on luxury, the Plymouth Sapporo was neither fitted with the best Mitsubishi engine nor the highest quality mechanical parts. Instead, it was equipped with a normally aspirated 2.6-liter 4-cylinder engine.
