In fact, the Plymouth Sapporo is just a version of the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, a subcompact car sold in Japan since 1976.

While the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda was being sold in Japan since 1976, the Plymouth Sapporo was introduced in the US only in 1978. It was a large subcompact car that was sold in the US until 1983. It was similar to the second generation of the Dodge Challenger, basically shares the same mechanical and body parts with the Sapporo except for some minor styling details. While the two are basically the same, they are marketed with different orientations. The Dodge Challenger was sold as a performance car while the Plymouth Sapporo was marketed as a luxury car.
