The Plymouth Road Runner today is considered as a timeless classic and a prized collectible car. But when it was introduced in the late 1960s, it was considered as a resurrection of an old style. It was the reincarnation of the true muscle car, the quick yet affordable car of the mid 1960s.

In the late 1980s, the image of the muscle car has shifted from the affordable fast car type to the luxurious, option laden costly type. Chrysler’s Plymouth division, in an aim to bring back the once popular and affordable car style, designed a brand new muscle car and introduced it in 1968 as the Plymouth Road Runner. The car was based on the Chrysler B-body platform, or simply a Plymouth Belvedere stripped out of its sheet metal body panels. To make it an affordable yet high performance car, Plymouth stripped off unnecessary options on the car and improved every part that has something to do with performance and handling. The result is a light and fast car void of any luxurious amenities or options.

When the car was introduced in 1968, it was available in pillared coupe and hardtop coupe body styles while a convertible model was introduced a year later. It was powered by a 335 bhp 383 V8 engine, the favorite for mopars during that time. A 426 Hemi V8 engine was also available at an additional cost. This style and design was chiefly unchanged until 1969. In 1970, the car was given a major cosmetic restyle, a styling that was later used for Plymouth’s one and only true super car, the Plymouth Superbird.

1971 marked the beginning of the end for the original Plymouth Road Runner design, and also the end for the muscle car. The fuel crisis and the strict government emission control standards have caused the Plymouth Road Runner to perform poorer and poorer each year. 1974 would be the last year when the original Plymouth Road Runner muscle car would be produced. In 1975, the Plymouth road Runner was but a version of the Plymouth Fury. And from 1976 until it was dropped in 1980, it took the form of the Plymouth Volare.
