Plymouth Duster Parts

Chrysler used the “Duster” name for various Plymouth models throughout the years. The name first appeared in the A-body Plymouth Duster, an independent car model although much of the styling and components were borrowed from the Plymouth Valiant. It was later used to name F-body cars until the Plymouth Duster line as an independent car model was dropped by Chrysler. But the Duster name would appear as special trims for various other Plymouth cars, like the Plymouth Turismo and Plymouth Sundance.

The first Plymouth Duster was an A-body car introduced by the Plymouth-Chrysler division in 1969 as a 1970 model. The vehicle was basically a performance or sporty version of the earlier Plymouth Valiant, as the Plymouth division is not allowed to have another design for that period. It has a curvy exterior and a fastback look at the tail end. Most of its parts were borrowed from the Valiant while its interior was entirely reminiscent of the Plymouth Valiant. Engine options upon introduction include the 198 I6 engine, 225 I6 engine, 318 V8 engine, and the powerful 340 V8 engine. The 198 I6 was dropped in 1972 while a supposedly stronger and more powerful engine, the 360 V8, was introduced on the later part of its production years. The 360 V8 was indeed more powerful, but it was too large and too heavy, affecting the over-all performance of the Duster.

While the A-body Plymouth Duster ended in 1976, the name didn’t. After 1976, a new breed of Plymouth Dusters appeared, but this time they were fitted on the larger Chrysler F-body platform. This breed of Dusters didn’t become as popular as its smaller and faster predecessor.

But the Plymouth Duster name still wouldn’t end on the F-body cars. In 1985, the “Duster” name appeared once again for a special turbocharged trim of the Plymouth Turismo—the Plymouth Turismo Duster. The trim lasted until 1987 when the Turismo line was finally dropped. The “Duster” name would later appear on the performance version of the Plymouth Sundance. Chrysler claimed that the Plymouth Sundance was the Plymouth Valiant of the 1990s, and its performance version is fitting to be called the new Plymouth Duster.

With the variety of cars that used the Plymouth Duster name, finding the specific Plymouth Duster part for your car would be a bit difficult.
