One may wonder why Mitsubishi Motors and Chrysler Corporation have created many similar cars with different name. A perfect example is the Colt. There are two Colt cars manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors and imported in the US by Chrysler Corporation: the Dodge Colt and the Plymouth Colt. Both cars were based from the Mitsubishi Mirage. And the line-up of similar cars does not end up with the three, because another similar model was sold as the Eagle Summit.
So what does really the Plymouth Colt has to offer that its Dodge namesake and Mitsubishi and Chrysler stable mates does not have? The answer, obviously, is economy. Just like any other Plymouth vehicle, the Plymouth Colt was again the lower-end or economy version of the car. It was actually the same as the Plymouth Champ that was sold earlier and which it replaced in 1983. The Plymouth Colt also offers the best fuel economy rating among the other Mitsubishi Mirage based cars. And it also runs on fuel cheaper than the other three subcompacts.
On the downside, however, the Plymouth Colt is not as equipped as the Dodge Colt, Mitsubishi Mirage and Eagle Summit. Many interior amenities and comforts are also lacking for the Plymouth version, like air conditioning system, high quality radio and others. Furthermore, the other three cars offer more engine options than the Plymouth Colt. The Plymouth Colt was offered only with a 1.5-liter inline type 4-cylinder engine in its earlier years, with a more powerful 1.8-liter I4 appearing before its demise.
Aside from the engine options and the interior amenities, the difference between the Plymouth Colt and the three other Chrysler subcompact imports is largely insignificant. So if a comment is made that the Plymouth Colt looks boring, such comment is directed to the entire Chrysler subcompact import line-up. But the lack of engine options took its toll on the performance of the Plymouth Colt. The 1.8-liter engine was a welcome option, although it came a bit late. Its interior amenities were also acceptable, but the meager interior space was just not enough for most families.
There is not much that can be done with the car's interior space if you already own one, but its performance can largely be improved. With the use of high quality and high performance Plymouth Colt parts, like powerful engines, efficient transaxles and other mechanical components, one can boost the meager performance of the Plymouth Colt.
