The first-ever two door pillar-less hardtop that rolled off the production plant of Daimler Chrysler Plymouth division in 1951 is the Plymouth Belvedere. Production lasted until 1970. Giving off a power output of 97 hp for the various parts and systems of the car is a flathead six cylinder engine with a displacement of 3.6L.
Plymouth Belvedere produced for the following year came in with a new color tone to give the car its own identity. Its features were similar to other Plymouth models of those times thus it was repainted to separate it from the others. Together with the change in color tone is also the change in price which made the car more expensive. All in all, the total of units produced outnumbered the Ford Victoria and Chevrolet Bel Air which was then its close competitors in those times.
1953 Plymouth Belvedere was notably restyled which included several changes in features as compared to its predecessors. Among the notable changes were flushed rear fenders, packed up windshield and shortened wheel base. Plymouth Belvedere produced for 1953 adopted the engine for the previous year. Yet, sales became lousy with only 35,185 1953 Plymouth Belvedere units sold.
A Hy-Drive semi automatic transmission is also offered to compete with the fully automatic power glide transmission from Chevy. Ford also joined the competition with its Ford-O-Matic transmission although it was introduced in the following year.
The last Plymouth Belvedere was produced in 1970. After which, the Belevedere was modified and was labeled with a new brand name. It was then sold as a separate model.
