Being the first of its kind doesn’t mean that it would be the best of its kind. This was the case with the Plymouth Barracuda, a car that can rightfully claim that it is the very first pony car as it was introduced weeks earlier than the most popular pony car, the Ford Mustang. The Chrysler Corporation introduced the Plymouth Barracuda in 1964 as a 1965 edition. It was a compact car based on the A-body platform that Chrysler had been using on its other cars, including the Dodge Dart. The car was actually an upscale extension of the Plymouth Valiant but was targeted to the sporty and high performance car market. Engine options upon introduction include a 180 hp 225 slant six and an optional 273 ci V8. Larger and more powerful engines were introduced later, and much larger engines were fitted for the second generation of the car.

The second generation Plymouth Barracuda first appeared in 1970. After much failure in the pony car market, Plymouth decided to upsize the Barracuda and have it compete in the larger muscle car market. This time, the car was based on the E-body platform, a new, larger and much improved version of the earlier B-body platform. Larger, big block engines were also fitted in the car to make it perform just as the other muscle cars did. And the car was quite successful in its first year. But heightened emission control and fuel efficiency regulations took its toll on the car, and the succeeding models were not as powerful as the first. Again, the sales of the Plymouth Barracuda started to drop, and in 1974, Chrysler decided to retire it in its model line-up, together with similar Dodge Challenger.

The Plymouth Barracuda’s failure may be a case of bad timing. The car did perform well in either of the two forms it was fitted in. Competition and unexpected circumstances just got the better of it. But the car was indeed commendable, given excellent reviews by a lot of car critics. In fact, the first big block Plymouth Barracudas are favorite and rare collectibles today, with a single unit estimated at 2 million US dollars.
