Fuel efficiency and emission control has been a major requirement in the design of cars to be marketed in the US in the 1970s, and these conditions seem to favor the smaller Japanese import cars. That’s why many American car companies have started importing Japanese cars for their vehicle line-up and Chrysler is not slow to follow. Due to the success of the Mitsubishi Lancer based Dodge Colt, Chrysler decided to import more cars from Mitsubishi, and for the Plymouth division, the car is the Plymouth Arrow.

After the demise of the not-so-popular Plymouth Cricket in 1974, the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation has no compact car to offer. Taking advantage of its major interest in and partnership with Mitsubishi, Chrysler imported the Mitsubishi Celeste and sold it in the US as the Plymouth Arrow (also sold in Canada as the Dodge Arrow). The model was sold starting in 1976 alongside with the earlier and more popular Dodge Colt. Some similarities were expected from the two models as the Mitsubishi Celeste, from which the Arrow was based, is but an extension of the Mitsubishi Lancer, from which the Dodge Colt was based.

Yet, there was another Plymouth Arrow introduced by the Chrysler Corporation, and was actually sold side by side with the original Plymouth Arrow hatchback, or fastback coupe, from the 1979 model year. This new arrow was a sporty pickup truck based on the Mitsubishi Mighty Max. To stress the sporty character of the Arrow name, the Plymouth Arrow pickup truck was brightly colored with bold stripes running across its body. This pickup truck became popular in America and was manufactured until 1982, two years after the original Plymouth Arrow hatchback was dropped in 1980.

The two Plymouth Arrow vehicles may be considered as two distinct and different vehicles. While the hatchback model found its popularity in the racetrack, the pickup models became very famous in the commercial market. The truck was even named USA’s “Pickup of the Year”, an award given to it by the Pickup, Van & 4WD magazine. The Plymouth Arrow hatchback, on the other hand, was well praised for its outstanding racetrack performance. Its aerodynamic design made it a favorite in various race events, which was further highlighted by its powerful engine performance and superior handling capabilities.
