The Peugeot brand is popularly known in the motor racing industry. This can be attributed to the brand’s large success when it comes to speed performance. This French car manufacturer traces its humble beginnings to bicycle production. Its partnership with Daimler spawned the first Peugeot vehicle in 1889, from then on it slowly begun to make its mark on the automobile industry producing such cars as the 504, 405, 204 and the 304 series. The Peugeot 304 was manufactured from 1969 to 1980. The design of this subcompact car was largely based on the Peugeot 204. The 204 was the best-selling model in France during its release in 1969. The 204 holds the distinction of being the first Peugeot model to be equipped with disc brakes. Perhaps this was the reason why the company patterned the 304 after this car. 304 was available in different types including a convertible, van, two-door coupe, four-door sedan, and station wagon. A lot of its component was the same as the 204. The big difference between the two car lies on the front styling. The Peugeot 304 made use of a 1288cc four-cylinder engine (XL3). Meanwhile the line’s S version was fitted with a twin choke carburetor (XL3S). Succeeding models were equipped with a more powerful 1290cc displacement engine. During that time, the 304 was considered to be way ahead of its time. This was probably said because the car’s headlights can be adjusted to cater to both left and right hand drive. It was also the first to be equipped an engine that uses the same oil as the four-speed gearbox. It was advance with its employment of a fully independent suspension and full alloy overhead camshaft engine. The 304 got favorable reviews for its low fuel consumption, nice handling, and good performance. Peugeot has a systematic way of naming their car models. Each model is named in the form of X0Y or X00Y system. The X pertains to the size of the car (thus its class) while the Y is used to describe the model number. The rule of the thumb is that the higher the number, the newer the model. So it suffices to say that a Peugeot 406 is larger and newer than a Peugeot 304. But there are some exception to this system, like the 309 and some other variants on the 206 series.
