The awkward design and the problems it created for the minivan convinced the Oldsmobile division of General Motors to give the Oldsmobile Silhouette a major redesign. The design team opted to shift back to the conventional minivan design and dropped the fiberglass composites in favor of a sheet metal body panel. Thus, the second generation of the Oldsmobile Silhouette, which was introduced in 1997, was a bit different from the first generation both in style and in body design. And it also came more luxurious and more equipped. When it was last manufactured for the 2004 model year, the Oldsmobile Silhouette was available in five trim levels: GL, GLS, GLS AWD, Premiere and Premiere AWD. Standard engine used for the entire second generation of the minivan was the 3.4-liter V6 engine unit coupled with a 4-speed automatic transaxle.

Although Oldsmobile wasn’t able to create an impressive design for their last minivan, they did create one with an impressive performance. While the early 3.1-liter V6 unit didn’t provide it with a superior performance, the last two engines did place the minivan at the top of its class. The 4-speed automatic transmission unit was also one of the smoothest in its class while the minivan’s firm suspension gave it a superior handling and steering capability.
