It was the last minivan to carry the Oldsmobile brand, and just like any other things designated as the last, it must leave with it a legacy that would be impressed on the mind of its buyers. This must have been the design that the Oldsmobile has in mind when they introduced the Oldsmobile Silhouette, a minivan that is unique in most aspects, particularly in its design and style. But many reasons have compelled this General Motors division to shift back to the conventional minivan design, and rather leave a legacy of quality minivan performance.

Introduced in 1990, the Oldsmobile Silhouette offered something unique and different to the North American minivan market than the conventional or regular minivan. It was one of the first minivans ever manufactured that used fiberglass composites for its body panel instead of sheet metal. This design, however, was also used by the similar Chevrolet Lumina APV and Pontiac Trans Sport, both manufactured and sold by General Motors. Standard engine upon introduction was a 3.1-liter V6 rated at 120 hp coupled with a 3-speed automatic transmission. A 3.8-liter V6 unit rated at 165 hp became available in 1992 along with the 4-speed automatic transmission. By 1996, neither of the two engines was available and with the 4-speed automatic transaxle, only a 180 hp 3.4-liter V6 was available.

The awkward design and the problems it created for the minivan convinced the Oldsmobile division of General Motors to give the Oldsmobile Silhouette a major redesign. The design team opted to shift back to the conventional minivan design and dropped the fiberglass composites in favor of a sheet metal body panel. Thus, the second generation of the Oldsmobile Silhouette, which was introduced in 1997, was a bit different from the first generation both in style and in body design. And it also came more luxurious and more equipped. When it was last manufactured for the 2004 model year, the Oldsmobile Silhouette was available in five trim levels: GL, GLS, GLS AWD, Premiere and Premiere AWD. Standard engine used for the entire second generation of the minivan was the 3.4-liter V6 engine unit coupled with a 4-speed automatic transaxle.

Although Oldsmobile wasn’t able to create an impressive design for their last minivan, they did create one with an impressive performance. While the early 3.1-liter V6 unit didn’t provide it with a superior performance, the last two engines did place the minivan at the top of its class. The 4-speed automatic transmission unit was also one of the smoothest in its class while the minivan’s firm suspension gave it a superior handling and steering capability.
