Only a few are familiar of the car brand Oldsmobile because this brand of vehicle is produced for most of its existence by General Motors. Produced from 1987 to 2004 in the United States, this vehicle brand was founded by Ransom E. Olds. Unfortunately, it only lasted for 107 years but during its existence, Oldsmobile was able to produced 35.2 million vehicles, including no less than 14 million built at its Lansing factory. It was in 1908 when General Motors purchased the company.
But before and even after General Motor’s acquisition, Oldsmobile vehicles were loved for their sophistication. All vehicles produced under this name were infused with all the advances and innovations. To mention just a few, the first speedometer to be offered on a vehicle is in an Oldsmobile. The first automotive use of chrome plating was also in an Oldsmobile. The first monoblock V8 was seen on its Viking model.
Come the 1930s, the first fully-automatic transmission which is the forefather of every automatic transmission nowadays was offered in an Oldsmobile. It was also during the 1930s when Oldsmobile used a two-digit model designation just like to that used by European makes in this day and age. As initially applied, the first digit represents the size of the body whereas the second digit signifies the quantity of cylinders.
The body sizes were 6, 7, 8, and 9 while the engines offered were 6 and 8-cylinder. So Oldsmobile vehicles were called 66 to 98. In 1940s and 1950s, the naming systems continued when Oldsmobile changed once again. Those trim levels received names that were then attached with the model numbers. The Oldsmobile 88 became the base Dynamic 88, the better trimmed Delta 88, and the highline Super 88.
Another model which Oldsmobile produced was the Oldsmobile Fiesta in 1953. The Oldsmobile Fiesta was the more well-appointed and expensive vehicle released by the company. It was a convertible which was a replica of the famous ragtop. The Oldsmobile Fiesta had a distinctive painting scheme and it was the first vehicle in the United States that features wrap around windows. The Fiesta was not used once again until 1957 when its label appears on Oldsmobile’s station wagons.
