Sometimes car names can be confusing. Some models carry two names, just like the Oldsmobile F85 which is also known as Oldsmobile Cutlass. Considered to be one of the oldest surviving American car brands, Oldsmobile has produced numerous car models which are now considered to be classics. General Motors has produced this brand for almost 107 years before it stopped its production in 2004. Its impressive record includes the production of almost 35.2 million cars, at least 14 million of which are manufactured in the United States. It is in the same level as Peugeot and Daimler in terms of years in the automobile industry.
The Oldsmobile F85 started as an experimental car in 1954, aimed to target the sports coupe loving consumers. When it officially entered the market in 1961, it registered a disappointing sales figure. The four-door sedan and four-door station wagon models did not click with the consumers. The interest for the F85 begun to pick up when it divert back to the sports coupe design. The design included a pillarless two-door hardtop with a center console, unique sport trim and internal bucket seats. Optional engines were available together with the offered four-speed manual transmission. The V8 engine was created with a four-barrel version and can perform at 185 hp. In 1962 convertible was added to the Oldsmobile F85 line.
A bigger F85 with a conservative body-on-frame chassis was later introduced in 1964. The wheelbase was added with 115 inches and overall length and weight was increased to 203 in. and 300 lb. respectively. An optional two-speed Jetaway automatic transmission and small-block V8 of 330 cu.in. displacement was later created. The four-door sedan model also returned to the F85 lineup. From 1965 to 1966, constant changes both in engine and appearance was seen on F85 models. The major change came in 1967 when the three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic and optional disc brakes became available for the two-speed Jetaway.
The third generation Oldmobile F85 continued to score some major body restyling in 1968. This translated to more individual styling and better road performance. By 1970 the F85 grew in terms of body styles. There are now flat top station wagons, convertibles, four-door hardtops, four-door sedans, and fancier station wagons on the F85 lineup. Design upgrades continued until 1997, where the Cutlass name was revived for the Chevrolet Malibu version, later renamed Alero.
