The car’s correct and complete name is the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, but it is often called just the Oldsmobile Calais. It is one of the Cutlass cars that the Oldsmobile division of General Motors has produced, which also includes the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, which were different cars altogether. The Oldsmobile Calais was a compact car manufactured and sold by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors from 1985. It was based on the N-body platform which General Motors also used with their other cars like the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. Although the GM N-body platform, or N-platform, lasted until the Oldsmobile brand was dropped, the Oldsmobile Calais ended in 1991 and was replaced by the Oldsmobile Achieva.

Oldsmobile used two sets of four-cylinder inline-type engines for the Calais. The very first engine was a 2.5-liter I4 rated at 98 hp. This engine was given a power boost in 1989 to output 110 hp of power. Aside from the 2.4-liter units, Oldsmobile also introduced the 2.3-liter Quad-4 engine for the Calais in 1987. This engine produces a whooping 150 hp of power; powerful enough for a four cylinder engine during the time. The engine even became more powerful by 1990 as it was enhanced to output up to 180 hp of power and was used on the special edition Oldsmobile Calais Quad-442 model. A 3.3-liter V6 engine option also became available from 1990 to 1991 model year.
